“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18-19) These are words first spoken by the prophet Isaiah (as recorded in Isaiah 61). These words were then read in the synagogue from the Isaiah scroll by Jesus in the first teaching/message Luke records from Jesus. Jesus then expounded on this good news message making clear that this good news was for everyone. The work and ministry of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., declared in word and deed this same message of good news – good news to the poor, release to the captives, sight to the blind, freedom for the oppressed – for all people. May we God’s people continue to declare, in word and deed, that truly, the good news of God’s grace is for everyone!
Grace and peace,
