Grace Church hosted its seventh Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School in the summer of 2019. Fifty young people spent six weeks at Grace Church increasing reading skills, reading appreciation, growing in self-confidence, and having lots of fun together!
Freedom School met each weekday, from 8:00 a.m.– 3:00 p.m. Each day began with breakfast followed by Harambee – a high energy, enthusiastic, motivating start to each day! During Harambee students sang, danced, chanted, cheered, and heard a story read aloud by a local community leader. Scholars were then dismissed to participate in stimulating reading groups and work on developing their reading skills from 9:00 until 11:45. Lunch was served each day at noon. The afternoons were filled with enrichment activities and Friday field trips.
Our Grace Freedom School had two Level I groups (grades K-2), two Level II groups (grades 3-5) and one Level III group (grades 6-8). Each group was made up of ten scholars and was led by a Student Leader Intern.
The Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools program provides summer enrichment that helps children fall in love with reading, increase their self-esteem, and generate positive attitudes toward learning. Children are taught using a model curriculum that supports children and families around five essential components: high quality academic enrichment; parent and family involvement; civic engagement and social action; intergenerational leadership development; and nutrition, health and mental health.
Our hope is to be a Freedom School site in 2020! If you would like more information on the program, please contact the church office through the contact form on our website or call 937-278-4731.
Thank you for your support of the 2019 Grace Freedom School!
